Looking forward – with vision

By working in partnership, both locally and with regional bodies, new possibilities emerge for building on the area’s strengths and tackling its weaknesses, while exploiting opportunities and mitigating threats. The overall aim or vision for the Tavistock area can be summarised as ‘Promoting enterprises, safeguarding environments and strengthening communities’ with results characterised by:

  • An enduring prosperous economy strong in farming, food and commodities production, tourism and light industry
  • A range of good quality employment opportunities for local people
  • Respect for the natural beauty of the area and its peaceful, relaxed way of life
  • Respect for fragile and often unique ecosystems
  • The desire and means to reduce waste, energy use and pollution
  • Conservation and enhancement of the unique qualities of Tavistock and villages
  • New developments always in harmony with local styles and producing a sense of place
  • Excellent transport provision with new investment in car-parking, railways and buses
  • Wider interpretation of the district’s history and character
  • Quality sporting, leisure and cultural facilities and events that can attract local people and visitors alike
  • Universally good public services
  • A richness of community spirit and personal values
  • Regard for the particular needs of young and old
