| EC2.13 Vulnerability of markets to closure | |
Livestock markets have closed in other local centres (e.g. Barnstaple, Launceston and Penzance) and regional consolidation towards fewer, and maybe larger, markets is likely to continue, especially as the new EU subsidy regimes may encourage farmers to keep fewer animals. Tavistock market has the capacity to expand its operation. It is well-situated to serve the large number of farms in the surrounding area, and lies close to two main trunk roads (the A30 and A38 are about 13 miles distance). Many local farms, especially those on Dartmoor, raise store animals which are valued for their quality and do well when auctioned for subsequent fattening. Despite these positive factors, the market’s longer-term viability is difficult to gauge in the currently changing agricultural climate. An additional and compatible enterprise on the same site could help to strengthen its position. As an example, a spectators’ viewing gallery could provide an interesting new tourist attraction as livestock markets become a less common feature of modern life. |
