Premises for new businesses are in short supply although West Devon Borough Council plans to build 5000 square feet of managed workspace in 12 units at Pitts Cleave Quarry in 2004.

The Federation of Small Business (FSB) claims that many existing local micro-businesses cannot afford the full range of modern facilities needed to compete effectively and that they either go without or borrow what is available from community groups. The facilities include meeting rooms, office machinery, IT resources and portable display stands. The best way of meeting this need is being researched but it could involve adapting some village halls as well as providing a dedicated centre in Tavistock.

‘Would like to see small business units for craft workshops at reasonable cost.’
