West Devon Borough Council makes available standard historic building grants for repairs to historic buildings. It contributes 20% of the cost for private homes up to a maximum of £1500. Over the years, many home improvement works have been undertaken without
prior Listed Building consent. The cumulative effect of alterations to
features such as doors and windows is particularly noticeable on the
Duke of Bedford cottages. Until recently, there was a Conservation Area
Partnership Scheme (CAPS) for all Duke of Bedford cottages (not just
those in Tavistock). Part-funded by English Heritage, Devon County Council
and West Devon Borough Council, the CAPS provided grants for up 40% for
the re-instatement of original features. Take up for the scheme was poor.
The Planning Authority has since approved enforcement action and an incremental
approach is being taken towards implementation. |
