In the Town Centre, overuse of signing and street furniture is not a major concern. However, the ‘Town Alive’ studies in 1999 raised concerns about the quality of street furniture (e.g. lamp standards and park benches) and the need for consistency in interpreting the town’s heritage.

On the southern edge of the town, along the A386, many company name boards are displayed to the detriment of the area’s character. The worst examples are large and illuminated; as with the Texaco petrol station, Safeways and Macdonalds.

‘Less unnecessary signs.’
