With few exceptions, the urban fabric is in good condition. The main issue is with street furniture as there is a feeling that it is does not always respect the town’s fine historical setting. Achieving the right quality and consistency of design is likely to need an objective review of where the current approach fails, accompanied by proposals from designers and craftsmen.

Allied to street furniture is the poor quality of illuminations used for Abbey Weir and Bedford Square. There should be scope to achieve a better effect in both places while reducing light pollution and energy consumption.

Tavistock’s public toilets are in unusual locations, often in historic buildings or areas and consequently difficult to upgrade in the way achieved in other towns. Although the problems are appreciated, it is felt that the toilets reflect poorly on the town and improvements are needed.
