Community planning

Community planning encourages local people to take a long, hard look at their community; what is right with it, what is wrong, the opportunities for improvement and the threats that may arise along the way. From doing this so-called SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) a future vision for their community starts to emerge. Once agreed, it sets a direction for new developments over the next twenty years or so.

The Market Towns’ Health Check is a tool for helping with the SWOT analysis, obtaining information and ideas, and building consensus for an action plan. The Health Check consists of a series of worksheets with a total of about 200 questions covering a wide range of social, economic, environmental and transport topics. They are designed to gather information and stimulate thinking.

Completing the Health Check for the Tavistock area

The Tavistock area undertook a Market Towns’ Health Check during 2002 and 2003.

In summer 2002, consultation events were held in Tavistock, Horrabridge and Lydford. Questions were posed on a number of leading topics and many thoughtful comments were collected as a result. The consultation events were agreed to be extremely successful.

In autumn 2002, a co-ordinator funded by the Countryside Agency completed a ‘snapshot’ view of the area. Together with the public consultation results, this initial survey helped to decide on the themes and priorities for subsequent work.

In summer 2003, the co-ordinator assembled much of the information required for the worksheets by reviewing reference material, talking to local people with specialist knowledge and by researching information from the internet.

In October 2003, a draft Health Check report was made available to the Tavistock and Villages Initiative Steering Group and, following a ‘peer review’, the final Health Check report was published in December 2003.

Health Check information categories

Information in the Health Check comes from a range of sources which have been categorised as follows:

The computer symbol is used to denote information taken from the Internet.

Information in the ‘binocular’ sections has come from a wealth of reference material including local history publications, promotional leaflets, timetables, local authority reports and minutes, as well as the evidence of local subject matter experts. The sources are too numerous to acknowledge individually but together form the largest part of the Health Check report.

The smiley/grumpy symbol denotes opinion and comment. Most entries have been collected from the consultation events in 2002 but they also include relevant comments which have appeared in the Tavistock Times and other journals. Further comments are invited and they can be easily made from every page of this Web site.

This site will be continuously maintained to keep track of issues and projects as they develop. Use the form on each page of this site to make to make your own suggestions and comments, or to raise questions.
