The following projects will help with delivering the strategic aims:

Projects in delivery phases – what is already happening

  • Tavistock College playing fields. Frequently waterlogged and unplayable in previous winters, the playing fields at Tavistock College are to be drained and re-laid.

Projects in planning phases – what is being planned
  • Events calendar. With a wide range of sporting, leisure and cultural events taking place across the area, good co-ordination and promotion are becoming increasingly important. This project aims to establish a recognised calendar so that every event can draw the widest possible audience.
  • Music Festival. Tavistock is already host to several high-quality musical events but they stand alone and often do not receive the prominence they deserve. This project aims to raise the profile of local music and establish an annual festival that can draw visitors into the area.
  • Crowndale Recreational Site. West Devon Borough Council is co-ordinating a three-way bid to make an all-weather pitch in the grounds of Tavistock College, to create a junior and a senior football pitch on land between Crowndale Road and the River Tavy, and to improve changing facilities, access and car-parking for Tavistock Football Club.
  • Drake's Trail. This project is intended to attract and lead visitors around the sites linked to Sir Francis Drake. It would involve developing new access spurs from the main Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route as well as trail-marking and promotional activities.
  • Lamerton Sports and Community Centre. Built cheaply in 1933 and beyond the end of its economic life, Lamerton Village Hall has many defects, as well as being out of the village centre and unable to meet modern-day needs. The cost-effective approach identified in the business plan is to build a new hall on part of the recreation field and to release the present site for housing. With several new uses envisaged, including business support and training provision, the project is inviting support from a wide range of interests. Fundraising is well advanced but a substantial amount has still to be found.
  • Lydford Community Hall. Completing a major three-year programme of refurbishment, enabled by a lottery grant, this hall now complies with all new regulations except for its lack of heating. Because of the difficulties in reaching minimum temperatures, the hall is effectively unavailable for use during much of the winter. With other financial demands, the Lydford community is unlikely to meet the cost of a new heating system on its own and is seeking charitable or lottery support.
  • The Princetown Village Centre. A key project in Princetown's regeneration programme, the projected community centre will address the acute lack of sports and social facilities. Additionally, the centre will provide a base for health and education services, as well as for business start-ups and community enterprises. A feasibility study from 1998, and revised in 2003, is being used to engage with public agencies, local authorities and other partners and identify a funding package.
  • Fillace Park. Heavily used by sports teams, the facilities have become run down and do not meet modern standards. The priority is to provide a new pavilion with changing rooms followed by pitch levelling and grounds improvements.
  • Town museum. Run by a volunteer staff, the museum moved into its prestigious location in Court Gate in 2003. The move has led to a recognition that further development depends on receiving professional advice. This project is to acquire the services of a museum curator who can review the collection and recommend how it should be catalogued, displayed, interpreted and developed.
  • Tavistock Town guided tours. Details in ‘Older People

Projects in concept phases – what is being talked about
  • Prison and community links. Discussions are taking place about how art and design might be used to benefit both prisoners and the local community.
  • Canal recreational boating. The bicentenary celebrations of the canal in 2003, which included flat-bottomed boat trips, showed the possibilities for regular recreational boating on the canal, including disabled access. The main hurdle to overcome is to plug the leaks so that the summer water level can be easily maintained.

  • Buckland Monachorum studio workshops. Possibilities are being explored for converting a small barn to provide studio workshops for use by artist-makers and the local community.

  • Village sports fields. Several villages aspire to improve local pitches and changing facilities, both to enable more people to take part in sporting activities and to meet the various regulations. The ability to raise funds is mixed and it may be possible to achieve more by addressing the situation on an area-wide basis.
