The
following projects will help with delivering the strategic aims:
Projects
in delivery phases – what is already
happening
|
| |
| |
- Devon
Coast to Coast Cycle Path. This runs between Plymouth and Ilfracombe
and incorporates the Plym Valley Path, the Granite Way and parts of
the Tarka Trail. It already contains some of the finest and longest
stretches of off-road cycle path in Europe. With external funding secured,
Devon County Council is bringing the route to its final standard and
this will include new off-road sections between Tavistock and Plymouth,
and new bridges over the Tavy and Walkham rivers.
|
| |
- Young peoples’ transport. Also known as ‘Getting
There’, this WestDEN project offers viable solutions to some of the
transport problems faced by young people living in rural areas. It loans
small-engined scooters and advises on how to keep a car or motorbike serviceable.

Projects
in planning phases – what is being planned
|
|
- Reopen
railway to Tavistock. Devon County, Plymouth City and West Devon Borough
Council plans all acknowledge that a railway to Tavistock could help
with reducing traffic volumes on the A386. A railway would also support
environmental tourism aims. The main hurdle to overcome is to demonstrate
that the operational costs would be containable and bring worthwhile
benefits.
|
|
- Bus
shelters. There is considerable scope for bringing bus shelters
across the area into effective management and improving them for passenger
comfort. The project is starting with a review of the existing situation
before going on to identify and implement a package of lasting improvements.
|
|
-
Tavistock
Hoppa bus service. Residential areas around the fringes of Tavistock
are up to a mile away from the town centre and, whilst walking
or cycling is preferable for daily journeys, it is not always possible
especially for older people. Pilot schemes have shown that a ‘clock-face’ Hoppa
bus service could attract regular usage and would help to reduce
short car-trips into the town centre. The next stage is to research
travel patterns more thoroughly and test the market for different
timetables.

Projects
in concept phases – what is being talked about
|
|
-
Rural
public transport services. Where rural bus services are infrequent
and poorly used, a Ring-and-Ride type of service might suit local
needs better. One model is ‘Corlink’ in rural areas
of Cornwall but there are others which could involve the use of
taxis. There is much to discuss before changes could be contemplated
and this may require new research into local transport needs.
