| S5.2 Demand for specific sports or leisure facilities not currently satisfied | |
Respondents to the surveys for a ‘Leisure Strategy for West Devon 2000-2006’ were asked to rate various aspects of recreational provision within West Devon. 55% think the facilities for outdoor recreation are either ‘good’ or ‘very good’. The poorest regarded facilities are those for young people where 36% scored them as either ‘not very good’ or ‘poor’, followed by facilities for indoor sports. 175 different people mentioned at least one improved or new facility
they would like to see in West Devon, but the list was long and extremely
varied, reflecting the number of settlements covered and the lack of
one overriding (perceived) deficiency. 12 people mentioned a sport and/or
leisure complex at Tavistock. The most frequently requested new or improved
facility was for a more formal swimming pool. There were 5 mentions referring
to the development of the Crowndale site to incorporate a number of different
facilities, although other requests were made for more pitch provision
in Tavistock (which could be sited at Crowndale). |

The following comments were made during surveys for the Leisure Strategy 2000-2006: ‘What we really lack in West Devon is a sports centre in Tavistock
which could cater for facilities not supplied by local groups…….everything
is too piecemeal and fragmented.’ ‘Would like sports hall, floodlit pitches and simple standard
pool in Tavistock’ ‘Would like sports complex in Tavistock.’ ‘There is a need for indoor games facilities for rural schools
with no hall.’ ‘….Tavistock’s need for outdoor sports facilities
has been demonstrated for many years and it is taking volunteers to attempt
to fill the demand by constant fundraising.’ |
