Whilst the area contains many historical artefacts from the Bronze Age onwards, the main associations revolve around:

Tavistock and Buckland Abbeys. Tavistock was demolished after the Dissolution while Buckland was converted into a country home.

The Victorian mining heritage in all parts of the area but the main association is focused on Morwellham Quay as the port where ores were exported overseas. A bid is being prepared for Cornish and West Devon Mines to become a World Heritage Site.

The Bedford heritage, linked to the fortunes from mining, is evidenced by many fine buildings both in Tavistock and the surrounding area.

Dartmoor prison at Princetown built by French prisoners of war has acquired a reputation for its remoteness.

Lydford with its Norman castle and medieval layout is particularly well preserved in its historical form.
