The Devon Coast to Coast National Cycle Route passes through Tavistock. In its present interim state, it enters from Brook Lane and follows Plymouth Road to the town centre; this is hardly ideal given the volume of traffic on the main road. The interim route leaves the town centre to the north along Exeter Street, which is a quiet road. In its final state, the cycle route will have more off-road provision and some of the links are already in place. The most notable are:

  • A path through the Meadows from Tavistock College which includes a subway under the A386 (opened in 2003), a footbridge across the River Tavy to Benson’s Meadow and from there to St John’s Walk.
  • The viaduct walk made into a cycle route in 2000 with a new link to Exeter Road past West Devon Council Offices.
  • The canal towpath behind Tavistock College and Primary School with a bridge over the canal to Monksmead.
