Tavistock’s layout is fairly intuitive with plenty of distinguishing buildings and other features to orientate the visitor. Movement is generally easier along the Tavy Valley than across it and there are several places where progress is impeded by buildings, cemeteries or waterways. Greater emphasis on pedestrian routes in the urban design would be helpful and should embrace pavement materials, alignment of pedestrian crossings, siting of street furniture and planting.
